130 layoffs expected for UPS facility in Alabama – AL.com

United Parcel Service, Inc. plans to lay off nearly 130 employees at its facility in Montgomery next year as part of a large wave of job cuts.

UPS spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill confirmed the layoffs with AL.com on Friday. The 118-year-old shipping and logistics company announced the cuts in a notice filed with the state earlier this week.

UPS isn’t closing its sorting facility in Montgomery – just shutting down one of the shifts, Tomaszewski Hill said.

“Our employees are extremely important to us, and we understand the impact this may have on them and their families,” she said in an email. “We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions. We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support.”

The company first signaled upcoming job cuts and building closures earlier this year, calling it “the largest network reconfiguration in UPS history.” And in October, the company noted that it had cut 48,000 jobs in its third-quarter results.

Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.
