Gulf States Alert UN to Iranian Attacks as Violations of National Sovereignty
In light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East, representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states are voicing grave concerns over the impacts of Iranian military actions in the region. As the conflict involving Iran continues to intensify, the United Nations Human Rights Council has highlighted the potential for widespread destabilization, urging all nations involved to prioritize dialogue and peace over aggression. Gulf states’ representatives recently addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, asserting that recent Iranian military actions against their territories constitute a significant violation of state sovereignty. This meeting, called by the Gulf states amid escalating tensions, coincides with warnings from the UN’s rights chief, Volker Turk, who emphasized that the ongoing conflict could lead to an “unmitigated catastrophe” as the situation moves towards the one-month mark of hostilities.
At the emergency session held in Geneva, Saudi Arabia’s representative, Abdulmohsen Majed bin Khothaila, denounced Iranian aggression, stating that Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have been subjected to attacks despite their non-involvement in the conflict. He underscored that these actions breach both the UN Charter and international law. “Attacking neighbors violates the principles of good neighborly relations,” he stressed, highlighting that such aggression undermines peace efforts and constructive initiatives aimed at reconciliation.
Similarly, Qatar’s UN representative, Hend bint Abd al-Rahman al-Muftah, portrayed these attacks as sources of considerable concern that impact global peace, security, and human rights. She pointed out the significant environmental implications of targeting critical infrastructure, such as electricity and desalination plants, which threaten essential human rights.
Kuwait’s ambassador, Naser Abdullah Alhayen, echoed these sentiments by stating that the Gulf region faces an existential threat to both international and regional security due to the ongoing aggressive actions. He remarked that this behavior jeopardizes the foundations of international law and state sovereignty.
As the conflict continues, Turk cautioned that the precarious situation is becoming increasingly dangerous and unpredictable. He urged all nations, especially those with influence over the situation, to prioritize conflict resolution and work diligently towards peace.
In the midst of this turmoil, reports indicate that GCC countries are keen on securing their role in future negotiations between the United States and Iran. While a slight decline in attacks on Gulf nations has been noted, the potential for a single Iranian attack to cause significant disruption remains.
