Lebanon detains suspected drug lord identified for U.S. sanctions.

In a significant move toward combating the ongoing drug trade in Lebanon, authorities have successfully captured notorious drug lord Noah Zaitar, who had long evaded law enforcement while allegedly running a lucrative narcotics empire. This arrest not only reflects the Lebanese military’s dedication to restoring safety but also underscores a broader regional commitment to addressing the challenges posed by drug trafficking and organized crime, particularly those involving cross-border networks linked to neighboring Syria.

The Lebanese army has detained Noah Zaitar, recognized as one of the country’s most notorious drug lords, two years after being sanctioned by the United States due to his suspected involvement in narcotics operations in Syria. On Thursday, the Lebanese military confirmed the arrest of a suspect identified by the initials “NZ,” with multiple security sources verifying that this individual is indeed Zaitar.

In a coordinated effort involving extensive surveillance and monitoring, Zaitar was apprehended during an ambush in Baalbek, located within the eastern Baalbek-Hermel governorate. The military stated that Zaitar was among the most dangerous of fugitives, bearing numerous arrest warrants for his involvement in extensive drug and arms trafficking, as well as violent criminal activities including robbery and forced kidnapping. The military report also indicated that Zaitar had previously engaged in firefights with military personnel and opened fire on civilian homes, which showcases the peril he posed to public safety.

Zaitar allegedly operated a drug empire in the Bekaa Valley, a region known for its proximity to the Syrian border, where he was involved in the production and exportation of captagon, a synthetic stimulant. His criminal activities had led to a military tribunal sentencing him to death in 2024 for the murder of a Lebanese soldier.

His name was included in U.S. Department of State sanctions against the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2023, identifying him as a known arms dealer and drug trafficker with affiliations to Syria’s elite Fourth Division of the Arab army, a unit central to the captagon trade. Additionally, he was accused of providing material support to Hezbollah, a Lebanese political and military organization.

The arrest of Zaitar aligns with an ongoing initiative by Lebanese authorities to crack down on drug trafficking. Reports indicate that during a recent operation in Baalbek, Lebanese troops were engaged in conflict resulting in the deaths of two soldiers, underscoring the risks faced by security forces in the battle against narcotics operations. Additionally, during this same operation, authorities shot and killed another suspect involved in multiple crimes, including the murder of four soldiers and drug trafficking.

In related actions, two other suspects—identified by the initials FM and GQ—were taken into custody for drug promotion and weapon possession in the Akkar governorate, emphasizing the authorities’ comprehensive strategy against the pervasive issue of drug crimes in the region.
