Five acts withdraw from Trump’s ‘Great American State Fair’ with Bret Michaels being the latest to drop out
As preparations unfold for the “Great American State Fair,” set to take place later this month, the event is amid growing uncertainty regarding its lineup of musical acts. This event is notably part of the Trump administration’s “Freedom 250” celebrations, which coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States. Currently, Vanilla Ice remains the only artist to have confirmed participation enthusiastically. The status of three remaining acts—Flo Rida, C+C Music Factory, and Milli Vanilli—remains in limbo, with Flo Rida remaining silent and conflicting messages emerging from representatives for the other two groups.
Bret Michaels, frontman of the rock band Poison, recently announced his withdrawal from the event, citing concerns about the changing nature of the celebration. In his statement shared on social media, Michaels expressed that the occasion was initially billed as a “celebration of our country through music,” intended to honor hardworking Americans across various sectors, but this premise had shifted toward a more divisive atmosphere. He also highlighted security concerns, with threats made that he found deeply troubling, stating he had to prioritize the safety of all attendees, including his fans and crew.
Martina McBride, a prominent country singer, also opted out, revealing her belief that she was to perform at a nonpartisan gathering. However, McBride felt misled as the event’s true nature unfolded, which did not align with her understanding of it being a wholesome celebration reminiscent of traditional state fairs she has frequently attended. She expressed disappointment at any fans who might perceive her withdrawal as abandoning the sentiments her music represents.
On the other hand, the Commodores explicitly stated via their social media that they refuse to associate “publicly with any single political party,” echoing the sentiments of others who have withdrawn.
As it stands, the performance lineup for the “Great American State Fair,” managed by Freedom 250, still includes Vanilla Ice, along with tentative commitments from Flo Rida and C+C Music Factory. Vanilla Ice has emphasized in public statements his intention to focus on a celebratory experience, distancing the event from political sentiments and highlighting a desire for unity over division.
The Great American State Fair is a free event, although attendees are encouraged to register in advance for tickets. It will feature not only music but also speeches, aerial flyovers, and a fireworks display. Meanwhile, a competing event, the “Power To The People Festival,” is scheduled for October in Maryland, featuring a robust lineup including Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters.
The juxtaposition of these events illustrates the current musical landscape’s politicization, creating a complex environment for artists who seek to engage with their audiences in meaningful, yet politically neutral ways.
