Box Office: Scary Movie Tops Charts with .7M, Masters Follows with .4M
This weekend marks a pivotal moment for cinema as two major studio releases vie for audience attention, following the success of recent hits by emerging filmmakers. Paramount Pictures’ “Scary Movie” and Amazon MGM’s “Masters of the Universe” are set to debut against a backdrop of impressive box office performances by films like “Backrooms” and “Obsession,” which have captivated younger viewers and set benchmark records.
“Scary Movie,” the latest installment in the long-running spoof franchise, has already made a significant entrance with .7 million from Thursday night previews across 2,800 theaters. The film is anticipated to expand to approximately 3,400 theaters throughout North America, with projections for its opening weekend earnings estimated to reach around million. This R-rated comedy revisits the genre’s familiar tropes, offering a satirical lens on horror films and pop culture. Notably, the film is produced in collaboration with Miramax and brings back the franchise’s original creators, the Wayans Brothers, to the project for the first time in over 20 years.
Directing this new chapter is Michael Tiddes, who collaborates once again with franchise veterans Anna Faris and Regina King. However, despite the nostalgic allure, critics have not embraced “Scary Movie,” as reflected by its current Metacritic score of 37, indicating mixed to adverse reviews.
In parallel, “Masters of the Universe” provides a fresh take on the iconic toy and animated series. With Nicholas Galitzine portraying Prince Adam, also known as He-Man, the film features a narrative centered on Adam’s quest to save Eternia from the clutches of the villainous Skeletor, played by Jared Leto. The production, directed by Travis Knight, garnered .4 million in previews and is also expected to achieve a weekend total around the mid- million range. Critics have responded more favorably, giving “Masters of the Universe” a Metacritic score of 54.
In another intriguing development, Fathom Entertainment released “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act,” which saw unexpected box office success, earning .8 million on its opening day at over 2,200 locations, outpacing both new releases.
The continuation of box office interest is apparent as “Backrooms” enters its second week after already becoming a record-breaking hit for the A24 studio, and “Obsession” continues to surprise audiences in its fourth week of release, nearing a significant global milestone.
As both “Scary Movie” and “Masters of the Universe” hit theaters, industry observers will closely monitor audience reactions and potential trajectories for these films amidst a competitive landscape.
