Jason Momoa Leaves Justin Lin’s Sony Film ‘Helldivers’
In a surprising turn of events, actor Jason Momoa is reported to be stepping away from the film adaptation of the popular video game series “Helldivers,” which is being developed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The project, directed by Justin Lin, will proceed sans Momoa, although the reasons for his departure remain undisclosed. A media source indicates that while this development raises questions about the future direction of the project, it remains very much alive, with Sony actively seeking a new lead to fill the considerable shoes left by the celebrated actor.
“Helldivers,” a cooperative twin-stick shooter game first launched by Arrowhead Game Studios in 2015, invites players to don the role of elite soldiers tasked with the protection of “Super Earth.” They engage in intense battles to defeat various extraterrestrial foes, embodying the franchise’s core theme of uniting players to achieve common objectives in a challenging intergalactic landscape. The forthcoming film adaptation is currently shrouded in secrecy regarding its specific plot details, although it is slated to make its theatrical debut on November 10, 2027.
The successful sequel, “Helldivers 2,” released in early 2024, has reportedly sold over 12 million units on PlayStation 5 and PC within its first four months. The franchise continues to grow, recently expanding into the Xbox platform and maintaining strong sales momentum. This positive reception points to a significant level of interest and engagement among gaming audiences, which could ultimately impact the film’s reception.
Hutch Parker is producing the film alongside Asad Qizilbash from PlayStation Productions and Lin through his own Perfect Storm Entertainment. Both Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have a track record of successful collaborations, having previously worked together on noteworthy projects such as “Uncharted,” which grossed over 7 million globally and stands as one of the highest-grossing films based on a video game. Their partnership extends to other successful adaptations, including Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” and HBO’s award-winning “The Last of Us.”
As the search for a new lead actor unfolds, all eyes will remain on this adaptation as it seeks to capture the essence of a beloved gaming franchise while appealing to a broader cinematic audience.
