Somali Referee’s Dream of Opportunity Halted by US Border Patrol
Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a highly regarded soccer referee from Somalia, recently faced a significant setback as he was denied entry into the United States, preventing him from officiating at the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup. This development was notably distressing for Artan, who was selected as one of 52 referees for the tournament and would have made history as the first Somali referee to participate in a World Cup match.
According to a media source, Artan arrived at Miami International Airport on June 6, just five days prior to the tournament’s commencement. Upon his arrival, U.S. border officials detained him, subjecting him to an extensive 11-hour questioning process. Despite having the necessary documentation, including a valid visa and endorsements from FIFA, Artan was ultimately found inadmissible due to “vetting concerns,” as explained by a spokesperson from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Throughout the prolonged questioning, Artan presented various materials, including proof of his long tenure as a professional referee, during which he received prestigious recognitions such as being named the referee of the year in 2025 by the Confederation of African Football. Nevertheless, after hours of scrutiny, he was transferred to a holding cell and later placed on a flight back to Istanbul, leaving him with little understanding of the reasoning behind his rejection.

Somalia remains on a list of countries restricted under certain U.S. immigration policies established during the previous administration, creating challenging circumstances for individuals like Artan who seek to participate in global events.
