Hundreds of bird enthusiasts gather in Caernarfon to observe Western reef heron
In a remarkable occurrence for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, a rare western reef heron has been spotted in Y Foryd, Caernarfon, North Wales. This species, typically found across southern Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, was identified by experienced ornithologist Simon Hugheston-Roberts, who reported the sighting around 10:00 BST on Saturday.
Following Hugheston-Roberts’ announcement via a birdwatching WhatsApp group, the news quickly attracted a significant influx of approximately 300 birdwatchers to the area. This event marks a notable milestone as it is believed to be the first recorded sighting of the western reef heron in the United Kingdom.
Experts speculate that the bird’s presence may be due to strong southern winds, which could have inadvertently carried it away from its typical habitat. Notably, prominent naturalist and broadcaster Iolo Williams commented that this phenomenon of birds being blown off course is not unusual, although the western reef heron has rarely, if at all, been observed in the UK.
Hugheston-Roberts detailed his experience on that day, recalling how he spotted a small dark heron during his routine bird count. With extensive experience birdwatching in regions where such herons are more common, he was able to identify the bird accurately after ruling out other likely candidates. Observing a little egret alongside the heron further bolstered his identification process, allowing for a direct comparison.

The heron has been seen feeding along the harbor, roosting in nearby trees, and even navigating over Caernarfon Castle. This increase in visitors may contribute positively to local tourism.
As the enthusiasm builds, Hugheston-Roberts indicated that he plans to formally report his sighting to the British Birds Rarities Committee for verification purposes. Should the sighting be confirmed, it will be added to The British List, solidifying its status in the country’s ornithological records.
