Live-Action Series of ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’ Announced by BBC Studios, Kadokawa, and Wheel in Motion

BBC Studios Kids & Family has announced an intriguing partnership with U.K.-based production company Wheel in Motion and Japan’s Kadokawa Corporation to create a live-action television series inspired by Eiko Kadono’s acclaimed novel “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” This collaboration marks the first time the beloved story has been adapted into a live-action format for television.

The series is currently under development and will consist of ten half-hour episodes, drawing predominantly from the initial installment of Kadono’s six-book series. The narrative centers around a young witch named Kiki, who is just 13 years old when she leaves her hometown to establish a new life in the coastal city of Koriko. Kiki sets up a delivery service in her new environment, where she builds friendships and embarks on life-changing adventures.

Irena Brignull, known for her contributions to the Oscar-nominated animated film “The Boxtrolls” and other notable projects such as Netflix’s “The Little Prince,” is attached to write the series. Her involvement signals a commitment to maintaining the integrity and charm of the source material while potentially appealing to both new viewers and longtime fans of Kiki’s journey.

Originally published in 1985 by Fukuinkan Shoten, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” has achieved widespread popularity, selling millions of copies globally. The novel was adapted into a beloved anime film in 1989 by Studio Ghibli, directed by renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. This new adaptation coincides with the 40th anniversary of the original book series, presenting a unique opportunity to reintroduce Kiki to a modern audience.
