Salina secures second MLRA sweep against Davenport
Jonathan Davenport showcased his racing prowess at the Salina Highbanks Speedway, clinching a substantial ,000 in earnings during a thrilling weekend of racing. The Blairsville, Georgia native achieved this remarkable feat by sweeping the Midwest LateModel Racing Association (MLRA) events, further solidifying his status as a leading contender in the series.
On Saturday evening, Davenport secured a dominant victory in the 30-lap feature race, which offered a ,000 prize. This win marked his second MLRA sweep of the season, following his initial victory of ,000 on Friday, which also took place at Salina. In the Saturday race, he crossed the finish line ahead of fellow competitor Aaron Marrant, demonstrating both skill and strategic racing.
As the competitors navigated the challenging track, Davenport expressed his enjoyment of the race environment, mentioning the intricate dynamics of racing in tight quarters with lapped cars. He adeptly maneuvered through the obstacles posed by multi-wide racing, emphasizing the compelling nature of the competition.
Davenport’s recent achievements further enhanced his standing within the MLRA, as he notched his 19th career feature victory in the circuit. His recent successes also include a sweep of the MLRA weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri, earlier this April. With the addition of a ,000 bonus for the best combined finish over the weekend, his total earnings from Salina exceeded ,000.
Despite being acknowledged for his independence from the national tour this season, MLRA playfully referred to him as “Cherry Picker” on the oversized check for his winnings, alluding to his dominant performance in local events. The race itself was relatively uneventful, with only a single caution arising from a situation involving Brett Hansen on lap 14, allowing Davenport to maintain control of the race.
The Salina event attracted a field of 31 competitors, with Davenport also securing the title of fast qualifier, clocking a time of 14.869 seconds. Accompanying him in the race were notable competitors such as Tony Jackson Jr. and Eli Ross, all of whom vied for placement in a highly competitive setting.
Looking ahead, the next event in the MLRA series is scheduled for July 31 at the Brownstown Bullring in Brownstown, Illinois, where drivers will compete for a ,000 prize.
