Cardi B discusses conquering fear and anxiety to release her album during BET Awards speech

At the 2026 BET Awards, Cardi B, the acclaimed rapper and cultural phenomenon, took a moment to reflect on her journey of overcoming personal fears in order to release her much-anticipated sophomore album, “Am I the Drama?”. This album, which debuted in September 2025, serves as a follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut, “Invasion of Privacy,” released in 2018.

The ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, showcased a plethora of talent, where Cardi B was recognized with the award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist. Presenters Luke James and Jacob Latimore highlighted Cardi’s significant impact on the music industry, further solidifying her status as a leading figure in the genre.

During her acceptance speech, Cardi B humorously remarked on the weight of the award, likening it to that of a newborn. She expressed her gratitude, stating that the honor holds tremendous significance for her. The rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Almánzar, candidly shared her insights about confronting anxiety and fear while producing the album. “Three babies later, I put the album out, honey. Yes. I overcame my fear, my anxiety and I put it out. I put it out, and guess what? I won an award,” she stated.

In a heartfelt acknowledgment, Cardi also conveyed thanks to her fans who supported her on her “Little Miss Drama Tour,” referring to her audience as her ‘babies’ and expressing her love for her family and faith. Cardi, at 33 years old, is a mother to three children—Kulture, seven, Wave, four, and Blossom, 21 months—whom she shares with ex-husband Offset, and she recently welcomed a new son with former boyfriend Stefon Diggs.

Alongside her emotional speech, Cardi B energized the audience with a vibrant medley that featured songs from “Am I the Drama?”, including “Hello,” “Check Please,” “ErrTime,” and “Pretty & Petty.” The event also featured performances from other notable artists such as T.I., who opened the show with his hits “Top Back” and “Let ‘Em Know,” Raye, delivering an emotional performance of “Nightingale Lane,” and Tems, who showcased her talent with “What You Need.”

The night was not solely about Cardi’s triumph; it also saw Clipse awarded Album of the Year for “Let God Sort Em Out” and Kehlani honored with Video of the Year for “Folded,” reflecting the diversity and excellence within the music industry.
