Daveigh Chase, voice of Lilo in ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ has passed away due to AIDS-related complications

Daveigh Chase, an actress renowned for her role in the iconic horror film The Ring and for voicing Lilo in the beloved animated feature Lilo & Stitch, has passed away at the age of 35. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has revealed that her cause of death was Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), with chronic polysubstance use noted as a secondary factor.

Chase’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, had previously conveyed that she succumbed after a prolonged battle with meningitis and a severe blood infection that led to septic complications. In an emotional tribute on a crowdfunding platform shortly before her death, Hernandez expressed that Chase faced numerous challenges throughout her life. He recounted her difficult childhood and the adversities she endured while living in downtown Los Angeles, including episodes of bullying and struggles to find a sense of safety and happiness. Their relationship, he noted, provided moments of solace amidst the turmoil.

Reports indicate that Chase’s father, John David Schwallier, also characterized her life as particularly troubled. He disclosed that she had been homeless with Hernandez in the vicinity of the hospital where her life ultimately ended. Schwallier acknowledged that their estrangement lasted over fifteen years, though he maintained contact with Hernandez and was present at the hospital shortly before her daughter’s demise. He also indicated that Chase had grappled with substance abuse issues since her teenage years.

In addition to her prominent roles in The Ring and Lilo & Stitch, Chase’s career included appearances in several other notable projects, such as Donnie Darko, Big Love, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Her last credited performance appeared in a 2016 video game, Let It Die. Following her departure from acting, Chase faced legal difficulties that included charges related to drug possession and involvement with a stolen vehicle.

Chase’s passing serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by individuals in the entertainment industry, where public personas often mask profound struggles and hardships. Her journey by no means defines her talent but rather highlights the complex realities behind the glittering facade of fame.
