Netflix Uses AI to Recreate Gene Wilder’s Voice for ‘The Golden Ticket’
Netflix is set to launch its latest reality competition series, “The Golden Ticket,” on September 23, marking a significant addition to its programming lineup more than two years after initiating production. The series is themed around the beloved world of Willy Wonka, derived from Roald Dahl’s iconic book “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.” This release coincides with the 55th anniversary of the original film adaptation, which starred the late Gene Wilder in the titular role.
In an innovative move that is expected to ignite discussions surrounding the ethical implications of technology, Netflix has collaborated with the Wilder Estate to digitally recreate Wilder’s voice using artificial intelligence. Karen B. Wilder, Gene Wilder’s widow, expressed her enthusiasm for introducing her late husband’s unique charm to a modern audience, stating that she is “delighted” to see his “magic” continue through this new format.
The voice recreation is being undertaken by ElevenLabs, a company specializing in AI-generated audio. Notably, the firm has previously been involved in projects aiming to revive the voices of other illustrious figures, such as Michael Caine for an audiobook rendition of “The Odyssey.” Additionally, ElevenLabs has collaborated with the estate of superhero legend Stan Lee to bring his voice back to life for specific projects.
In a nod to the original film, Rusty Goffe, who portrayed an Oompa Loompa in the 1971 adaptation, will also make a cameo in “The Golden Ticket.” The competition features twelve contestants, each accompanied by a partner, who will navigate a series of whimsical and challenging tasks within a recreated version of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. These activities are designed to assess the contestants’ physical, mental, and moral fortitudes, culminating in a chance to win a significant prize.
A two-part finale of “The Golden Ticket” is scheduled to air on September 30. The project has seen a fierce competitive selection process among production companies, with multiple firms, including Fremantle and Eureka Productions, vying for the opportunity to produce this series. Ultimately, Eureka Productions secured the rights to transform this cherished literary and cinematic legacy into an unscripted television experience.
Filmed in the picturesque Gold Coast of Australia, the nine-part series received support from the local government, and a number of notable executives from the industry, including Chris Culvenor and Paul Franklin, are involved in production. This revival not only pays homage to Wilder’s remarkable career but also aims to captivate a new generation of fans.
