Walmart recalls lettuce due to cyclospora outbreak contamination
Walmart has initiated a recall of iceberg lettuce products supplied by Taylor Farms in response to a potential health risk linked to a cyclosporiasis outbreak. This precautionary move affects stores in 27 states across the U.S., where the retailer has removed specific bags of Marketside Bagged Iceberg Salad and Shredded Iceberg Salad from its shelves. The company reported that there are currently no confirmed illnesses associated with these items.
A statement released by Walmart emphasized its commitment to customer safety, noting that while there is no evidence linking the lettuce sold in stores to the ongoing investigation into cyclospora outbreaks, the decision to remove these products was made based on information received from Taylor Farms.
The removal of the lettuce products at Walmart follows similar actions taken by Taco Bell, which announced that it had pulled all lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from its restaurants. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) previously indicated that the shredded iceberg lettuce provided by Taylor Farms de Mexico was implicated in the outbreak, which is characterized by symptoms such as prolonged diarrhea.
The CDC’s recent investigations have found that more than 5,000 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in Michigan alone, with over 100 hospitalizations. This has raised concerns that additional retailers or food service providers may also be affected, as Taylor Farms lettuce was distributed widely, including to many restaurants.
Taylor Farms, based in Guanajuato, Mexico, has confirmed that it is suspending processing and distribution of iceberg lettuce obtained from the region while it addresses the recall. Major food distributor Sysco has also halted sales of these potentially tainted products at the supplier’s request.
Consumers who purchased these recalled salad products are advised not to consume them and to either discard them or return them to Walmart for a full refund. A media source has reported that this situation is being closely monitored, as it could impact not only retailers but also customer foot traffic at restaurants serving salads or tortilla dishes that incorporate leafy greens.
Data from a traffic analysis firm indicates that there has been a noticeable decline in customer visits to certain restaurants, including Taco Bell and others known for salads, amid rising health concerns.
The recall underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety standards and the potential consequences of foodborne illnesses on public health and commercial operations.
