Disney+ Orders ‘Afterlife With Archie’ Series for Halloween 2027 Premiere

Disney+ has officially announced the production of “Afterlife with Archie,” an hour-long drama series inspired by the acclaimed Archie Comics franchise. Scheduled for a Halloween 2027 premiere, this highly anticipated project further expands the platform’s original content offerings.

The decision to greenlight “Afterlife with Archie” follows a significant script-to-series commitment that was made approximately nine months prior. Much like its predecessors, “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” this new series will be spearheaded by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who serves as writer and executive producer, alongside notable collaborators Greg Berlanti and Jon Goldwater. The production is being developed under the auspices of Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, where Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti hold overarching deals.

The premise of “Afterlife with Archie” reimagines the all-American setting of Riverdale as a landscape overtaken by zombies. The story unfolds when a spell cast by a teenage witch backfires, prompting chaotic and supernatural repercussions. As the undead descend on Riverdale, Archie Andrews and his friends must navigate this apocalyptic scenario, facing not only external threats but also the trials of adolescence that have historically bonded them. This duality of horror and relatable teenage themes is expected to resonate with long-time fans and attract new audiences.

Aguirre-Sacasa, who ascended to the role of Chief Creative Officer for Archie Comics in March 2014, has previously achieved success with notable horror adaptations within the comic realm. The upcoming series represents his personal ambition to translate the original comic’s blend of humor and horror into a live-action format for Disney+.

As reported by a media source, the project will feature executive production by Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons via Muckle Man; as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions. The creative team aims to bring the essence of friendship, loyalty, and resilience that characterizes Riverdale to the forefront of this new adaptation.

“Afterlife with Archie” marks the third live-action adaptation of Archie Comics created by Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti Productions, following the trailblazing successes of “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” It also stands as Warner Bros. Television’s inaugural series for Disney+, signaling a growing collaboration between the two entities.

The anticipation surrounding “Afterlife with Archie” signifies a continued interest in the evolving narratives within the Archie Comics universe, appealing to a diverse audience base eager for both nostalgia and innovative storytelling.
