Blade Runner 2099 teaser unveiled at SDCC reveals first look at anticipated sequel

Ridley Scott’s longstanding ambition to create a television spin-off of his acclaimed science fiction film, Blade Runner, is set to culminate in the release of a new series, Blade Runner 2099. Nearly five years have passed since Scott first outlined his vision for this series, which is inspired by both the original 1982 film and its 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049. The highly anticipated project was showcased at San Diego Comic-Con, where Prime Video launched its first teaser for the ten-episode series.

During the event, showrunner Silka Luisa, alongside cast members Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, presented insights into the upcoming series. Luisa emphasized that Blade Runner 2099 will adhere to the noir style characteristic of its predecessors, while also embedding a rich mystery that bridges the narratives of both past and future. Central to the story is a dystopian world in which humans are no longer at the top of the social hierarchy. Following a failed uprising, humans are now hunted as second-class citizens, which raises profound questions about what it means to be human in an existence where humanity’s relevance is questioned.

According to the official synopsis, the narrative takes place fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. The city of Los Angeles has undergone a dramatic transformation, though not through human effort. The protagonist, Cora, a fugitive seeking to escape her tumultuous life, assumes the identity of a Blade Runner to confront her past. She partners with Olwen, a dying Replicant, on a mission to track down a runaway harboring knowledge that could upend the fragile order of their city.

Michelle Yeoh takes on the role of Olwen, with Hunter Schafer portraying Cora. The series also features an ensemble cast that includes Hugo Hamlet, Dmitri Abold, and several others in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.

Blade Runner 2099 is scheduled to premiere on November 25, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video, further contributing to the ever-expanding landscape of dystopian storytelling in contemporary media. Additionally, Prime Video continues to develop its portfolio with a third season of The Rings of Power, highlighted by its substantial investment in the acclaimed series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works.
