Double Fine Cuts Jobs After Separation from Xbox

Double Fine Productions, the studio best known for developing the acclaimed game Psychonauts, has recently undergone a significant restructuring following its separation from Xbox. This move comes as part of a broader initiative impacting multiple game development studios, with Double Fine managing to avoid closure while still facing substantial operational changes. The studio has announced that 23 members of its staff will be departing as it adjusts to its new status as an independent entity.

In an official communication via social media, Tim Schafer, founder and head of Double Fine, expressed the gravity of this decision. He highlighted the challenges faced by a small, close-knit team when making such difficult cuts—a necessity aimed at ensuring the studio’s survival and future sustainability. Double Fine is reportedly committing to supporting the affected employees through this transitional period, an indication of the studio’s dedication to its workforce even amid financial restructuring.

The studio’s transition to independence is part of a larger trend affecting several organizations in the gaming industry. Earlier this month, Double Fine, along with Compulsion Games, was released from its previous contract with Xbox, enabling both studios to retain their intellectual property and existing game catalogs. The restructuring also saw Xbox divesting three additional studios: Ninja Theory and Undead Labs were sold to undisclosed buyers, while Arkane Studios’ future remains uncertain as it enters into a mandatory consultation process in France.

Double Fine’s last major release was the multiplayer party game Kiln, which launched in April. Under the ownership of Xbox, the studio had previously released the much-anticipated sequel to its original title, Psychonauts 2, in 2021, along with another game, Keeper, in 2025. This consistent output of creative content underscores the studio’s commitment to innovation within the gaming landscape.

As the gaming industry continues to experience rapid changes, Double Fine’s evolution illustrates the complexities of navigating independence while striving to maintain a loyal and talented workforce. The future will reveal the studio’s next steps, but its adaptability may serve as a roadmap for others in similar positions.
