Steam Hardware Survey Reveals Octa-Core CPUs Dominating Market as RAM Capacity Declines and 1080p Resolutions Fade

Valve’s latest Steam Hardware Survey has unveiled significant shifts in the personal computer market, revealing crucial trends in processor popularity, memory usage, and display preferences that reflect the evolving landscape of technology. As the computing industry continues to respond to advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence and memory pricing, these findings provide an insightful overview of current consumer behavior.

The July 2026 survey dataset highlights a notable transition wherein eight-core central processing units (CPUs) have surged ahead of their six-core counterparts, marking a pivotal moment in consumer preferences. Reports indicate that eight-core CPUs now command a leading position, accounting for 27.85 percent of the market—a rise of 0.4 percent. In contrast, six-core CPUs have experienced a modest decline, falling to 27.5 percent, relegating them to second place. Additionally, there were slight gains in the market share of 10-core and 18-core Intel CPUs, indicating a broader acceptance of higher core counts among users.

Memory configurations also reflect changing trends, as 8GB RAM systems are witnessing a rapid growth trajectory, connected to the ongoing challenges in the semiconductor market. Despite this growth, 16GB remains the dominant configuration at just under 41 percent, while 32GB setups account for nearly 37 percent. The survey indicates a subtle exchange between the 8GB and 16GB categories, with a 0.2 percent shift toward more basic RAM configurations.

On the graphics front, display resolution data reveals a significant decline for 1080p displays. This popular resolution has experienced a reduction of nearly a percentage point, now representing 51 percent of the reported setups. The demand for higher resolutions is clearly on the rise, as users increasingly favor 1440p displays, which posted a 0.26 percent gain. Such trends signal a transition toward higher-quality visuals, as affordability for advanced technologies continues to improve.

In addition to these trends, the survey also notes a shift from Windows 10 to Windows 11 along with a stabilization in competition between AMD and Intel CPUs. Alongside this, there appears to be a slight uptick in Nvidia’s GPU market share, highlighting competitive dynamics within the industry.
