Gemini overlay for Wear OS now available on Pixel Watch

Google has introduced a new overlay design for its Gemini application on Wear OS, enhancing the user experience by aligning it closely with the interface found on Android phones. This update is part of a broader effort to foster cross-device consistency, ensuring that users encounter a seamless experience whether they are using their smartphones or smartwatches.

Previously, engaging with Gemini on Wear OS necessitated launching the full application, which could disrupt the user experience. The newly designed overlay allows users to interact with Gemini while still viewing their current watch face, which is a significant shift towards a more integrated aesthetic. The overlay includes elements such as Gemini’s Neural Expressive background along with a spark icon and user greetings, making the interaction both functional and visually appealing.

According to visuals released on the Play Store, this overlay not only displays a transcript of user prompts but also confirms actions taken within the app. A subtle yet noteworthy change is the repositioning of the system microphone privacy indicator, now relocated to the top of the screen for improved visibility.

The full Gemini application on Wear OS has also benefitted from the visual updates implemented in this redesign, creating a unified appearance for the AI assistant across all platforms. However, it should be noted that despite these interface enhancements, Google has not altered the nature of responses generated by the Gemini assistant. This redesign first appeared in May and was seen on devices like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, indicating a phased rollout of the new features.

The latest version of Google Gemini on Wear OS, labeled version 1.36, has been widely released via the Play Store. However, the corresponding visual enhancements come with a server-side component that has not yet been universally deployed, meaning that some users may still experience the older version of the interface.

Gemini’s capabilities on Wear OS are also set to expand, with upcoming watches expected to incorporate task automation features. As the tech industry continues to evolve, Google aims to solidify its presence in the smart wearables market, emphasizing user engagement through design consistency and innovative features.
