iOS 27 Suggests New Photo Authentication Feature with Apple Reference Image
Apple Inc. is reportedly developing a new system called “Apple Reference Image,” a photo provenance feature intended to verify whether an image has been captured using an iPhone. This feature was unveiled in a privacy disclosure included in a recent beta version of iOS 27; however, it is not yet publicly available.
The proposed system will introduce a “Reference” mode option within the Camera application, which users can select to embed provenance data directly into the image’s metadata. This initiative aims to bolster confidence in digital photography, particularly in an era where the authenticity of images can frequently come under scrutiny.
When users capture photos in this Reference mode, the system facilitates an authentication process that begins by allowing users to tap a Reference badge on the image. This action sends key information, including the raw image data, sensor signatures, timestamp, and unique hardware identifiers of the camera sensor, to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers. The PCC then assesses the information to validate the authenticity of the photo, assigning it a unique identifier and returning an authenticated version to the user’s device.
In this authentication process, Apple retains sensor data, a hash, and the authentication results but does not store the raw image itself. The company maintains control over the integrity of its sensor data, with the capability to refuse authentication for images from sensors that appear compromised, as well as the power to retroactively revoke prior authentications.
The authenticated images can be accessed on various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs, providing a uniform experience across its ecosystem. Notably, the existence of this Reference mode indicates that the feature is tailored for professional photographers, journalists, and others who require rigorous validation of their images. Additionally, there are indications that the reference functionality could extend to videos, given that the privacy disclosure mentions both “photos or videos” and “uncropped footage.”
The introduction of this feature will align Apple with the growing demand for authentically verified images, particularly significant as advancements in artificial intelligence facilitate the creation of realistic-looking but fabricated visuals. Competing camera manufacturers, such as Leica, Sony, and Nikon, have implemented similar authentication measures, utilizing the C2PA Content Credentials for verifying the authenticity of images. Google has also adopted this framework for its Pixel 10 series, suggesting that Appleās forthcoming system will serve a similar essential role in safeguarding photographic integrity.
