Paramount Announces Release Date for ‘Possession’ Remake

Paramount Pictures has officially announced a release date for its eagerly awaited remake of the cult horror classic “Possession,” originally released in 1981. The film, which draws on the dark themes of the original, will debut in theaters on June 11, 2027, coinciding with the release of Universal Pictures’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

The updated version stars noted actors Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley, who take on the roles of a married couple in a narrative set against the backdrop of Cold War-era West Berlin. The original “Possession,” directed by Andrzej Żuławski, featured Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill in a harrowing story of love and supernatural terror. It has since been acknowledged as a landmark within arthouse horror cinema, earning Adjani the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her compelling performance.

The contemporary adaptation of “Possession” is being helmed by Parker Finn, who is not only directing but also contributing the screenplay. Finn’s notable previous work includes the successful horror film “Smile.” Joining Turner and Qualley in the cast are notable actors such as Diego Calva, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Paul Dano, each bringing their unique talents to this reimagined narrative. The project is produced by Finn alongside Jonathan Fass through Bad Feeling, with further production support from Roy Lee and Andrew Childs at Vertigo, as well as Robert Pattinson. The executive production duties are overseen by Marc Bienstock.

The announcement of “Possession” comes during a competitive landscape in the horror genre. Just a week prior to its release, Columbia Pictures is scheduled to unveil “Skeletons,” directed by JT Mollner and starring Brie Larson. Following the release of “Possession,” audiences can anticipate the animated feature “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” set to be released on June 18, potentially positioning summer 2027 as a noteworthy season for horror and family films alike.
