Rising tensions in the Middle East have once again erupted into violence, with recent Israeli airstrikes claiming the life of Colonel Jamal Abu Kamil, the head of the civil police force in Gaza City. An Israeli drone strike in Gaza City has resulted in the death of Colonel Jamal Abu Kamil, the head of the local civil police force. The strike, which occurred on Thursday, targeted Abu Kamil’s vehicle on al-Rashid Street and left two others injured, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Interior. The incident follows a resumption of Israeli air raids in the area after a temporary pause, during which deadly ground attacks have continued.
The Israeli military stated that the strike aimed to “remove a threat,” asserting, without any evidence, that Abu Kamil was associated with Hamas. However, Gaza’s police force refuted these claims, emphasizing that Abu Kamil remained dedicated to his police duties and had no connections to any militant endeavors. The Ministry of Interior insisted that he was “assassinated” in the attack, while Hamas condemned the killing, labeling it a continuation of the Israeli forces’ aggression against the Palestinian people.
In a related incident earlier on Thursday, an Israeli strike on a motorbike in Khan Younis resulted in one death and left another critically injured. As with the earlier attack, Israeli officials claimed the target was a Hamas commander, yet failed to provide any substantiating evidence for this assertion.
The resumption of airstrikes marks a significant escalation, with the Israeli military having carried out its first air raid in Gaza since August 3, targeting a vehicle in Beit Lahiya that killed a municipal worker and injured five others. This uptick in violence comes on the heels of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire announcement, which had been meant to de-escalate hostilities.
In July, President Donald Trump revealed a 15-point plan intended to bring peace to the region. While Hamas expressed its willingness to accept the proposal to prevent a return to full-fledged war, it stipulated that the implementation of the agreement hinges on Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and cessation of military operations.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disregarded the ceasefire agreement, stating last Sunday that military forces would remain until Hamas was “genuinely disarmed.” Just days later, airstrikes resumed, leading to an escalating situation that has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,250 Palestinians since a “ceasefire” purportedly came into effect in October 2025, as reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has since urged for adherence to the U.S.-backed Gaza Peace Plan, condemning both the attacks on civilians returning to Gaza and the ongoing settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
