Whole Foods recalls salsa, guacamole, and prepared foods in 12 states due to salmonella concerns

Whole Foods Market has issued a significant recall affecting a range of products, including salsas, guacamole, pico de gallo, and prepared foods containing fresh jalapeño peppers. The recall stems from potential salmonella contamination linked to produce supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. This action affects consumers across 12 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that the recalled items carry “Best Before” dates between August 7 and August 16. Currently, there have been no reported illnesses connected to the affected products; however, the move is part of a broader precaution as a multistate salmonella outbreak has already sickened 345 individuals, with 36 requiring hospitalization across 27 states. The outbreak has raised concerns about food safety as the disease can lead to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, fevers, and abdominal cramps.

The products in question were identified as a consequence of ongoing investigations regarding jalapeños sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors, which also had products implicated in a prior recall by Taylor Fresh Foods. Whole Foods’ spokesperson has indicated that the recall was issued solely due to the supplier’s issues. Customers are advised to either discard the recalled items or return them to any Whole Foods store along with their receipt to obtain a full refund.

In addition to the foods sold by Whole Foods, several other prominent brands are also involved in the fallout from this outbreak. Retailers including Walmart and brands such as Taylor Farms, Deli Kitchen, and Marketside are similarly affected. Chipotle and QDOBA, popular fast-casual dining chains, reported utilizing jalapeños linked to this contamination; both have since altered their supply chains to mitigate risk.

In light of the current situation, the FDA continues to urge consumers to remain vigilant regarding food safety and to check their purchases against the recall list available on its official website. The agency is actively monitoring the food supply to prevent further incidents tied to this health risk.
