Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh hospitalized in critical condition.

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s health has become a focal point of concern among her supporters and the nation as she battles a serious lung infection. As the 80-year-old politician remains in intensive care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, her family and party members are calling for prayers and support during this critical time, underlining her longstanding influence on the political landscape of Bangladesh.
Khaleda Zia, who served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for three terms, is currently hospitalized due to severe complications from a lung infection. According to information from her party, her condition has been described as “very critical,” prompting family members and supporters to urge the public for prayers in hopes of her swift recovery. Zia, who has faced multiple health issues including heart problems, kidney complications, and diabetes, was admitted to the hospital on November 23 after displaying significant symptoms.
Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossein, Zia’s personal physician, informed the media that while she is in intensive care, there are signs of improvement as she responds to treatment. He confirmed, “At this moment, I can say her condition has been in the same stage for the last three days. In doctors’ terminology, we say ‘she is responding to the treatment’.” The Bangladesh National Party (BNP), led by Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has publicly expressed concerns regarding her health while calling for prayers for her recovery.
Zia’s health situation is further complicated by existing medical conditions, which include permanent cardiovascular issues and eye-related ailments. A planned air ambulance awaits to transport her abroad for advanced treatment, should her condition improve. Her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has lived in London since 2008, has also mobilized public support through social media, thanking individuals for their prayers and urging them to continue their support for his mother’s recovery.
Despite her health challenges, Zia maintains a strong commitment to her political role. She has signaled her intention to actively campaign in the upcoming February 2026 elections, where the BNP is positioned as a leading contender. Supporters like private company driver Liton Molla have showed their loyalty by gathering outside the hospital, expressing hope that Zia will recover shortly and return to the political arena.
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, emphasized the importance of Zia’s recovery, noting her role as a source of inspiration and leadership during this transitional period towards democracy. As the nation holds its breath for positive news regarding her health, Zia embodies resilience and determination in the face of adversity, making her recovery not just a personal matter, but one of national significance.
