Two-time world champion boxer Zolani Tete killed in shooting outside his home in South Africa
Zolani Tete, a prominent figure in the boxing world and a two-time world champion, has tragically lost his life in an armed ambush outside his residence in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has sent shockwaves through the sports community.
At the age of 38, Tete was reportedly intercepted by two assailants, who approached while he was waiting in his vehicle. In a brazen act of violence, these armed individuals, wearing balaclavas, unleashed a barrage of gunfire aimed at Tete and a 27-year-old female passenger, who is currently receiving medical care in a local hospital. The South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his sorrow, acknowledging Tete as one of the country’s finest boxers.
In the wake of this incident, law enforcement has launched a comprehensive investigation to apprehend the perpetrators. Tete made history by holding the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and claimed the IBF super-flyweight title in 2014. His impressive career included a record of 29 wins out of 34 bouts, alongside four losses and one no-contest, further solidifying his status as a formidable opponent in the ring.
Tete’s accolades include not only championship titles but also a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a title fight, achieved in just 11 seconds against Siboniso Gonya. Notably, Tete’s most recent bout took place in July 2022, where he secured a knockout victory over Jason Cunningham; however, the fight was later ruled a no-contest due to a positive drugs test that deemed him ineligible. Following a four-year suspension, which concluded on July 29, 2026, Tete’s manager indicated that he had been in training for a comeback, set for November 29.
The boxing community has begun to mourn Tete’s passing, with widespread tributes pouring in from fellow fighters, including Japanese champion Naoya Inoue, who praised Tete as a “wonderful boxer.” The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has also expressed condolences, highlighting the void left in the sport following his untimely death.
The circumstances surrounding Tete’s tragic end underscore the ongoing issues of violence in society, prompting calls for deeper reflection on safety and security in communities.
