However, her enthusiasm has been tempered by worries about the increased traffic at an already busy intersection. Community Drive, where York frequently navigates traffic during the morning rush, is a particular area of concern for her as she fears it will become even more congested with the new development.
York’s apprehensions extend beyond traffic. She also fears that increased foot traffic could result in higher crime rates, particularly related to theft and loitering. Mike York, her husband, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential risks associated with a shopping center attracting individuals experiencing homelessness and other crime-related issues.
The proposed project is strategically located near the intersection of Seventh Standard Road and Calloway Drive, an area that has seen rapid growth in recent years. Residents like the Yorks moved to Gossamer Grove seeking a quieter lifestyle, but the area’s development trajectory has prompted a reevaluation of their expectations for suburban living.
To mitigate these concerns, developer Jim Halferty assures that the project includes extensive road improvements aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. Plans for the development involve expanding the southern half of Seventh Standard Road into a six-lane expressway, complete with auxiliary lanes for turning and acceleration. Additionally, Calloway Drive will be upgraded to accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, and a revamped intersection with Seventh Standard Road will be established. These enhancements are scheduled for completion ahead of the new Costco and its neighboring amenities.
With development plans in motion, the central inquiry remains whether the existing infrastructure can sustainably support the expected growth in traffic and the integration of the new shopping complex within the Gossamer Grove community.
