Harvard introduces 9 startup bootcamp featuring AI avatars of instructors

Harvard Business School (HBS) is embarking on an innovative path to enhance its educational offerings by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) avatars into its curriculum. This initiative is a significant component of the HBS Foundry bootcamp, a focused eight-week program priced at 9, designed for aspiring entrepreneurs. The bootcamp combines traditional instruction with modern technology, featuring live weekly sessions led by experienced instructors alongside AI-generated avatars that deliver personalized feedback during practice pitches and simulated board meetings.

The avatars were developed by a startup known as HeyGen, and their use reflects the growing trend of leveraging AI in educational environments. Participants in the Foundry bootcamp engage with these digital personas to receive insights and critiques as they refine their business ideas. This technology aims to provide an interactive learning experience, allowing entrepreneurs to test their pitches and receive instantaneous responses, a feature that humanizes the feedback process.

Katharina Rings, the project’s director, initially envisioned the AI interaction as a simple chatbot. However, early feedback from students highlighted a desire for a more immersive and guided experience. This prompted a shift towards creating a more sophisticated avatar capable of engaging in nuanced dialogues. Participants have reported a positive reception to this approach, emphasizing the avatars’ unique role in aiding their business development journey.

While there is an undercurrent of skepticism toward AI among some segments of the student population, feedback from users of the Foundry program has thus far been encouraging. Many students appreciate the combination of innovative technology with HBS’s rigorous educational framework. Notably, Jeff Bussgang, co-founder of Flybridge Capital, expressed mixed feelings about his AI counterpart, acknowledging the “creepy” aspect of digital representations while also noting that students find it engaging and useful.

As educational institutions increasingly experiment with AI to enhance learning outcomes, Harvard Business School’s initiative stands as a noteworthy example of how technology can be harnessed to support traditional pedagogical methods. This exploration serves not only to adapt to the changing landscape of education but also to prepare future entrepreneurs for a world where technology plays an integral role in business dynamics.
