Yaya Toure makes history as first African coach to lead a team into the Champions League

Yaya Toure, the illustrious former Ivory Coast footballer, has etched his name in history by becoming the first African coach to guide a team into the main round of the UEFA Champions League. Just two months after his appointment as head coach of Slovan Bratislava, Toure led the Slovakian club to an impressive qualification campaign, culminating in their successful two-legged tie against NK Celje, which concluded with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Toure took the reins at Slovan Bratislava in June, and his impact has been remarkably swift. The club, which has achieved significant success in Slovak football, currently boasts a strong domestic record, including four league victories since his arrival. Their journey into the Champions League commenced in July with an initial win over the Georgian team Saburtalo, followed by a draw in the return leg. Subsequently, they triumphed over Sweden’s Mjallby in the second qualifying round, securing a spot in the playoffs that ultimately led them to a decisive victory over Celje.

With a storied career as a player, Toure is often celebrated as one of Africa’s greatest footballers. His legacy includes notable achievements such as winning the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009 and multiple league titles in both Spain and England during his tenure with iconic clubs. Toure retired from professional football in 2019 after an illustrious 18-year career that saw him garner numerous accolades. He is also recognized as one of the most decorated African footballers, clinching the African Footballer of the Year award four times between 2011 and 2014, in addition to winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivorian national team in 2015.

Prior to assuming the role of head coach at Slovan Bratislava, Toure had accumulated experience as an assistant manager across various European clubs and national teams, including a stint under his former Manchester City manager with the Saudi Arabian national team.

Slovan Bratislava is now poised to discover its fate in the Champions League when the group stage draw takes place in Madrid, a key moment that will define the club’s European journey this season.
