George Santos Receives Lifetime Ban from Kalshi, Marking the Exchange’s First Such Penalty
George Santos, a former Republican congressman, has been handed a groundbreaking lifetime ban from the prediction market platform Kalshi, alongside a hefty fine amounting to ,356. This disciplinary action stems from his violations of insider trading and market manipulation regulations, as outlined in a notice of disciplinary action released by the media source.
Santos was found to have engaged in trading on markets predicting his attendance at President Trump’s State of the Union address scheduled for February 2026. The media source reported that he made several public claims about his intended attendance, some of which were deemed false or misleading, in an effort to sway the market prices of related contracts.
On social media, Santos had anticipated his appearance at the event, even posting the day before that he would be “in the gallery.” However, during the address, he later revealed that he was at an airport, watching the event on television. Following these trades, Kalshi’s enforcement team intervened by freezing Santos’ account and subsequently referred the matter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the federal body overseeing prediction markets. In a settlement reached this summer, Santos agreed to pay ,000 to the CFTC, with part of the amount representing the profits he accrued from the trades and the remainder serving as a fine.
Despite his legal representative declining to provide comments to the media source, Santos took to social media to express a sarcastic appreciation for his lifetime ban from Kalshi’s platform. This unconventional relationship reflects a significant shift from earlier in his career, when he was involved in promoting Kalshi’s competitor, Polymarket. Santos’ association with Polymarket ended abruptly as regulatory scrutiny intensified regarding his trading activities.
Santos’ legal troubles are not new; he was expelled from Congress in 2023 following an ethics investigation. He ultimately pleaded guilty to wire fraud, misrepresentation to Congress, and defrauding campaign contributors, serving time in federal prison before being released in 2025 after his sentence was commuted by former President Trump.
Kalshi’s recent decision underscores its commitment to upholding strict regulatory standards within prediction markets. It is noteworthy that Santos was the only individual penalized in this latest round of enforcement actions; the platform announced additional penalties against other politicians who similarly violated its rules but opted to settle.
The circumstances surrounding Santos further highlight ongoing transparency challenges within prediction markets, especially as regulatory scrutiny mounts. Kalshi’s spokesperson indicated that Santos could face further legal action should he fail to comply with the imposed penalties.
