Sony to Pay .85 Million in PlayStation Store Credit to Eligible Gamers

PlayStation customers in the United States may soon see financial relief from a class action settlement involving Sony Interactive Entertainment, amounting to .85 million. The case, entitled Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment, centers around accusations that Sony engaged in anti-competitive practices by terminating the sale of game-specific vouchers, which allowed users to purchase digital games from alternate online retailers.

According to allegations brought forth in the lawsuit, the discontinuation of these vouchers forced consumers to exclusively use the PlayStation Store, ultimately resulting in inflated prices for digital games. The plaintiffs claim this practice infringes upon antitrust laws, undermining market competition and leading to higher costs for digital content.

The lawsuit highlights various titles affected by Sony’s alleged practices, including notable PlayStation exclusives such as “The Last of Us,” along with widely recognized third-party games like the “Mass Effect Trilogy” and “Resident Evil 4.”

This legal affair was initially settled in 2024, yet the settlement faced multiple rejections during the approval process. Most recently, a judge turned down the proposed plan in July 2025, stating that it lacked clarity regarding potential recoveries for affected class members. Following this, the approval process resumed in April.

While Sony has denied any wrongdoing and contends that class members were not harmed, a court has provisionally approved the settlement, pending final review. A hearing is set for October 15, during which the court will confirm the settlement details, allocate up to 25% of the amount for legal fees, and outline distribution plans for affected customers.

Eligible individuals automatically become class members, meaning they will receive a portion of the settlement directly credited to their PlayStation Network account. For customers who have deactivated their accounts, compensation will be issued in cash upon submission of qualifying purchase details.

It is important to note that eligibility is restricted to those who purchased digital games on the PlayStation Store after the cessation of voucher sales, specifically between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. Updates regarding the settlement distribution will be made available on the designated settlement website.

With the potential for a few dollars to be credited back to accounts, this settlement serves as a reminder of the ongoing scrutiny over digital marketplaces and the practices of major technology firms.
