Ford recalls almost 150,000 vehicles due to defect that increases risk of sudden power loss while driving
Federal regulators have announced a substantial safety recall impacting nearly 150,000 Ford Mustang vehicles due to a critical defect that may lead to a sudden loss of engine power while in motion. This recall, initiated by Ford and reported by a media source, is dated August 25 and pertains to 148,663 vehicles manufactured between 2024 and 2026, as identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The defect in question could result in the vehicles stalling unexpectedly, which significantly increases the risk of accidents since drivers may find themselves unable to accelerate or maintain speed. According to regulatory officials, the issue arises from the engine compartment wiring harness ground connections, which may fracture, leading to a complete loss of drive power.
In addition to potential power loss, this defect may also render other vital vehicle functions inoperative. Key systems such as the headlights, windshield washing system, air conditioning, and engine cooling fan could cease to function. The NHTSA highlighted that impaired visibility from non-functional headlamps, along with a malfunctioning windshield washing system, elevates the likelihood of collisions on the roads.
Drivers may be alerted to this defect through warning signals including the activation of the Check Engine light and other dashboard indicators, alongside an audible warning chime prior to experiencing power failure.
The defect stems from improper application of adhesive during manufacturing, where adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing may have compromised the wiring terminals or metal eyelets that secure the wiring to the vehicle’s frame. As a result, stress points created by this improper installation can cause the metal eyelets to bend due to engine vibrations, leading to fractures that disrupt critical electrical connections.
The NHTSA estimates that approximately one percent of the recalled vehicles might contain the defect, suggesting heightened scrutiny for vehicle owners regarding potential safety issues. Ford, as of mid-August, recorded eight warranty claims associated with this defect; however, there have been no reported accidents or injuries tied to the matter.
In response to this safety concern, authorized Ford dealers will replace the faulty components at no cost to the owners. Notifications to affected consumers are set to be dispatched between August 31 and September 4, with a full repair solution expected to be available by March 2027.
