Oscar Winner’s Emmy-Nominated Show Canceled After One Season

In a surprising turn of events, Amazon has decided to cancel the widely praised series Spider-Noir, which starred Nicolas Cage as the lead character Ben Reilly, a troubled private detective navigating the gritty streets of 1930s New York City. Despite earning critical acclaim and a strong fan following, the show has fallen victim to the unforgiving realities of production costs in the streaming landscape.

The show, which creatively reimagined the iconic Spider-Man character in a film noir setting, featured a talented ensemble cast including Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Oscar-nominee Brendan Gleeson. Its visual style, which allowed audiences the choice of watching it in black and white or color, was a unique artistic direction that set it apart from other superhero narratives.

Spider-Noir was adapted from the Marvel comic “Spider-Man Noir” and was developed by the same team behind the acclaimed animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This pedigree contributed to its favorable reception, culminating in a 92 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a commendable audience score of 90 percent. The series also made an impressive showing during awards season, earning 11 Emmy nominations, the highest number for any Amazon Prime series in 2026.

However, the show’s cancellation appears to be primarily driven by viewership numbers that did not meet Amazon’s financial expectations, particularly considering its high production costs. According to Nielsen ratings, Spider-Noir garnered approximately 2.6 billion viewing minutes within its first six weeks, but this did not translate into sustainable viewership figures.

The project was the first to emerge from a content deal between Sony and Amazon, a partnership that was intended to deliver original programming based on popular Marvel characters. Prior attempts to bring series such as Silk to fruition had faced hurdles earlier in the production process.

Since acquiring the film and television rights to Spider-Man in 1999, Sony has been at the forefront of various adaptations, driven by contractual obligations to produce new content regularly. This has led to continuous reboots and reinventions of the character over the years, including the successful integration of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland’s portrayal.

Despite the setback with Spider-Noir, reports indicate that Sony and Amazon remain committed to their collaboration, with additional projects reportedly in development, signaling that the superhero genre will continue to thrive in their joint efforts.
