Netflix and Sega developing ‘Crazy Taxi’ movie along with ‘Sonic’ and ‘Stranger Than Heaven’ projects
Netflix has initiated an ambitious collaboration with Sega to adapt several of the gaming giant’s renowned franchises into scripted entertainment. This multi-title deal is set to produce a feature film adaptation of “Crazy Taxi,” a beloved racing game that first captivated audiences in arcades in 1999. The film’s script will be penned by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, known for their work on the upcoming reboot of “The Naked Gun.” Producers include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, alongside Toru Nakahara from Sega, who have previously collaborated on the successful “Sonic” franchise.
In addition to “Crazy Taxi,” Netflix and Sega have revealed plans for two further adaptations: a children’s animated series centered around “Sonic the Hedgehog” and a movie inspired by the action-adventure game “Stranger Than Heaven.” The creative teams behind these projects aim to bring iconic characters and narratives to both longstanding fans and new audiences alike.
Brandon Riegg, Vice President of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the potential for these adaptations to connect with audiences across different eras of gaming. Each franchise offers a distinct set of characters and storytelling opportunities that have resonated with fans over the years.
Meanwhile, Toru Nakahara, serving as head producer at Sega, offered insights into the tone of the upcoming projects. He promised a blend of humor and excitement for “Crazy Taxi,” alongside a “cool yet cute” approach for “Sonic” and a serious, action-packed narrative for “Stranger Than Heaven.” The game “Crazy Taxi” challenges players to navigate chaotic urban landscapes as a cab driver, a concept that is expected to translate well to the big screen.
The animated “Sonic” series is currently under development, crafted with upper pre-school audiences in mind. The show aims to present Sonic and his friends in adventurous yet relatable scenarios, encouraging themes of friendship and teamwork.
“Stranger Than Heaven,” developed by RGG Studio, is a game set to release in January 2027, and its narrative follows the rise of a foreigner navigating the treacherous waters of early 20th-century Japan. This announcement signals Sega’s commitment to crafting rich storytelling experiences that honor its gaming legacy, a sentiment shared by Shuji Utsumi, president and COO of Sega.
These new projects will join Netflix’s expanding library of video game adaptations, which currently includes a variety of properties, ranging from “Assassin’s Creed” to animated series based on “Minecraft” and “Magic: The Gathering.” This strategic focus on video game franchises underscores Netflix’s ambition to tap into the lucrative intersection of gaming and streaming entertainment.
