Curry Barker’s new film ‘Anything But Ghosts’ scheduled for release in May 2027
The anticipation surrounding filmmaker Curry Barker continues to build as Focus Features and Blumhouse Atomic Monster prepare to release his next project, “Anything but Ghosts,” scheduled for May 7, 2026. This release date mirrors that of his successful film “Obsession,” which debuted on May 15 of the previous year and boasted an impressive opening weekend of .1 million in the domestic box office. “Obsession” further demonstrated its staying power with a remarkable 39% increase in revenue during its second weekend, ultimately grossing nearly 0 million worldwide.
Focus Features has secured worldwide distribution rights for “Anything but Ghosts,” with Universal Pictures International managing international distribution. Barker, who co-wrote the screenplay with Cooper Tomlinson, takes on dual roles in the film as both lead actor and director. The narrative revolves around Tomlinson and Barker portraying aspiring ghost hunters who swiftly find themselves embroiled in chaotic and terrifying circumstances. The film also features performances from Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul. Notably, Barker has indicated that this film operates within the same narrative universe as “Obsession.”
As the cinematic landscape heats up next summer, “Anything but Ghosts” will contend with other major releases, including Lionsgate’s “The Resurrection of the Christ (Part One)” and 20th Century Studios’ adaptation of “Beach Read,” which will also open on May 7. Furthermore, Sony is set to launch its cinematic representation of the popular Nintendo video game “The Legend of Zelda” on April 30, 2027, marking the beginning of the summer box office season.
Beyond Focus Features and Blumhouse, “Anything but Ghosts” is backed by several production companies, including Spooky Pictures and Divide/Conquer, among others. Executive producers on the project include Barker, Tomlinson, and Daniel Bekerman, while prominent producers such as Jason Blum and Roy Lee are also involved in the endeavor.
Barker’s earlier work, “Obsession,” which was acquired for million out of the 2025 TIFF Midnight Madness segment, became a significant success for Focus Features, setting records as both the highest-grossing title obtained from a film festival and Focus’s top-grossing film overall. With aspirations for “Anything but Ghosts” to replicate or exceed that success, Barker’s innovative storytelling and unique vision continue to capture the attention of audiences and industry professionals alike.
