Sega plans to modernize Sakura Wars as it confirms plot for Sakura Wars 6 on 30th anniversary

In a recent edition, a media source highlighted significant developments related to the iconic steampunk strategy RPG series, Sakura Wars, as it commemorates its 30th anniversary. Among the most interesting revelations is the potential storyline for a prospective Sakura Wars 6, crafted by series creator Oji Hiroi. While discussions have emerged regarding the future of the franchise, Hiroi confirms that he has already envisioned a plot featuring a character named Black Swan, who exists in a state of cryogenic hibernation. However, he has indicated that the complete details of this plot may not be readily accessible, questioning if the only other existing copy still resides with someone else.

Hiroi went on to elaborate that the mere existence of this narrative does not necessarily guarantee the development of Sakura Wars 6. He expressed openness to the idea but mentioned that he would require formal support—such as a prototype request along with appropriate compensation—before proceeding with any concrete production plans. Interestingly, he noted a departure from the series’ previous naming conventions, stating that if a sixth installment were to be produced, it would officially use the numeral “6” rather than the Roman numeral “VI.”

Complementing this narrative, SEGA producer Akira Nishino, who has been associated with the franchise since its inception, also shared insights into the company’s ambitions to adapt the original Sakura Wars games for modern platforms. Nishino indicated that while SEGA is committed to this transition, various challenges complicate the process, making it less immediate than fans might hope. Nevertheless, he reassured enthusiasts that the development team is diligently exploring feasible pathways to breathe new life into these beloved titles.

Moreover, Nishino revealed that he has a clear vision for the continuation of the 2019 iteration of Sakura Wars, also known as New Sakura Wars in Japan. However, he remained reticent in confirming any sequel, emphasizing that his ideas are still in the conceptual phase without a definitive plan for realization.

Satoru Akahori, a key scenario writer who had largely distanced himself from the franchise after Sakura Wars V, disclosed that he has recently re-engaged with the series, teasing further developments that he is currently unable to disclose. SEGA has also hinted at additional 30th-anniversary initiatives beyond existing projects which include pop-up shops and theatrical interpretations.

With the rich history and ongoing legacy of the Sakura Wars series, fans and industry observers alike are eager to see how these developments unfold in the coming years.
