Walgreens recalls popular eye drops due to sterility concerns
A significant recall has been initiated by Sterling Pharmaceutical Services LLC, affecting more than 500,000 Walgreens-branded eye-drop products due to concerns regarding sterility. The recall, initially announced on August 20, is part of a broader effort that encompasses nearly 750,000 eye-care products distributed under several brand names.
The urgency of the situation stems from a reported “lack of assurance of sterility” pertaining to the affected products, as indicated in a report by a media source from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). On September 21, the FDA designated this recall as Class II, signifying that the use of or exposure to the affected eye-care products might result in temporary or medically reversible health consequences, although the likelihood of serious health effects is considered remote.
Within the scope of this recall are approximately 301,114 bottles of Walgreens Lubricant Eye Drops and nearly 199,600 twin packs. Additionally, a range of other eye-care items distributed by companies such as AvKare, Reliable-1 Laboratories, Cameron Pharmaceuticals, TRP The Relief Products, and Major brands are included. Among these, more than 120,000 packages of AvKare Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution 0.5% Lubricant Eye Drops are affected.
The FDA has emphasized that ophthalmic products present a unique risk as medications directly applied to the eyes bypass certain natural defense mechanisms within the body. Therefore, it is critical for eye drops to maintain sterility to minimize the risk of infection.
Products involved in this recall range from Sodium Chloride Hypertonicity Ophthalmic Solution 5% and Lubricating Tears distributed by Reliable-1 Laboratories, to Cameron Pharmaceuticals’ Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5% Lubricant Eye Drops and TRP The Relief Products Gentle Eyes Lubricant Eye Drops. Major LubriFresh P.M. Nighttime Ointment has also been implicated in the recall.
At this time, representatives from Walgreens have not provided immediate comment concerning the repercussions of this recall or the measures taken to address these sterility concerns.
The FDA’s actions underscore the importance of product safety, particularly within the healthcare sector, where consumer trust hinges on the assurance of product integrity.
