Several US states reject Apple Wallet for digital driver’s licenses

The expansion of digital driver’s licenses within the Apple Wallet ecosystem continues to gain momentum across various states in the U.S.; however, two notable exceptions have emerged. Florida and Rhode Island have explicitly stated that they will not support the integration of Apple Wallet driver’s licenses in the near future.

As the adoption of digital identification evolves, a media source highlights that numerous states are actively working toward implementing this technology, with several already prepared to introduce digital driver’s licenses soon. Notably, Florida, which recently launched a new physical driver’s license and ID card, made no announcements regarding the availability of a digital counterpart. This omission aligns with Governor Ron DeSantis’s firm stance against the adoption of digital driver’s licenses, as he has expressed concerns regarding potential government overreach and privacy issues associated with such technologies.

In recent remarks, DeSantis articulated his objections, indicating that the conveniences offered by digital licenses do not outweigh the associated risks. This resistance to digital identification is not new for Florida, which previously provided a digital ID option but abruptly removed support in 2024. The state’s leadership appears to be resolutely against further exploration of this avenue; hence, any shift in this position may depend on future electoral outcomes.

Rhode Island, on the other hand, faces similar resistance. Walter “Bud” Craddock, the Chair of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) International Board, recently noted that there has been little momentum in adopting mobile driver’s licenses (MDL) within the state. Craddock explained that the primary interest at present comes from agencies like the TSA, and the lack of airport readiness in the New England area diminishes the incentive to develop digital driver’s licenses at this time.

Given the evolving landscape of digital identification, it is conceivable that Rhode Island could revisit the idea of integrating Apple Wallet driver’s licenses once current leadership transitions occur and if demand continues to grow.

As states across the U.S. increasingly embrace digital innovations, Florida and Rhode Island’s current positions illustrate the significant variances in public policy and governance related to digital identification systems.
