Musk escalates criticism of Ambani regarding delay in Starlink India launch
Elon Musk has intensified his criticism of Mukesh Ambani as SpaceX’s endeavor to launch its Starlink satellite internet service in India encounters significant delays. In a recent post on the social media platform X, Musk provocatively referred to Ambani as India’s “prime minister,” implying that the billionaire has substantial influence over the country’s governmental affairs. Musk’s comments suggest that Ambani is obstructing Starlink’s entry into the Indian market to protect his own business interests.
In his post, Musk emphasized the potential benefits that Starlink could bring to underserved regions in India, emphasizing how the service could enhance educational opportunities for children and facilitate access to global customers for small businesses. He further challenged Ambani’s monopolistic practices, questioning whether he would be willing to permit competition from Starlink.
Ambani’s telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio, has not yet publicly responded to Musk’s remarks. The escalating tensions come on the heels of Musk’s prior accusations that unnamed elites are impeding Starlink’s launch in India. The Ministry of Communications in India dismissed these claims, asserting that the current regulatory framework governing satellite communications is equitable and non-discriminatory. In a separate post, Musk posed the question, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?” suggesting a deeper probe into Ambani’s influence on regulatory matters.
SpaceX’s aspirations for Starlink in India date back several years, culminating in distribution agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel—the second-largest telecom operator in the country—once regulatory approvals were secured. However, the service has yet to receive clearance to commence commercial operations, despite having achieved essential regulatory approvals.
As per statements from the Indian communications ministry, the launch delays stem from ongoing security assessments required for Starlink and two other licensed satellite operators. These operators remain at a similar regulatory juncture, counteracting Musk’s insinuations that Starlink is being unfairly targeted.
India presents a lucrative market for Musk, home to over a billion internet users. However, operating in the country necessitates navigating a complex regulatory environment and engaging with formidable business figures like Ambani, whose Reliance conglomerate holds a pivotal position in India’s telecommunications landscape.
In addition to the challenges facing Starlink, Musk’s efforts to establish a foothold for Tesla in India have also encountered significant hurdles. The electric vehicle manufacturer launched operations in India last year, yet it recorded just 699 vehicle registrations in its inaugural year, largely attributed to high import tariffs that inflated vehicle prices.
The ongoing rivalry over satellite spectrum allocation between Starlink and Reliance Jio has further complicated matters. Musk’s preference for an administrative allocation of the spectrum clashed with Jio’s push for an auction process, which ultimately led to the Indian government opting for administrative allocation.
As Musk continues to voice his frustrations, India’s Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia firmly rejected the notion of a monopolistic market, reiterating that the country maintains a competitive landscape across sectors. The future of Starlink’s launch in India remains uncertain as regulatory hurdles persist in the evolving telecommunications landscape.
