Ryan Coogler’s reboot of ‘The X-Files’ officially picked up to series at Hulu
A media source has reported that Ryan Coogler’s long-anticipated reboot of the iconic series “The X-Files” has officially been greenlit by Hulu. The new iteration will star Emmy nominee Himesh Patel, known for roles in “The Odyssey” and “Station Eleven,” alongside Danielle Deadwyler of “The Bell Jar” fame. This reboot aims to breathe new life into the classic series originally created by Chris Carter, focusing on the dynamic between two distinctly different FBI agents who are brought together to explore cases involving unexplained phenomena.
Produced by Onyx Collective and 20th Television, Coogler, who is a multifaceted talent as a writer, director, and executive producer, has committed himself deeply to this project through his company, Proximity Media. The series will also feature Jennifer Yale as the showrunner, with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian serving as executive producers alongside Carter. Co-executive producers include Simone Harris from Proximity Media, along with actors Deadwyler and Patel, enriching the project with diverse perspectives.
Coogler expressed his long-standing admiration for “The X-Files,” highlighting the significance of honoring its legacy while forging a new direction. The casting of Deadwyler and Patel is viewed as a crucial step in introducing fresh narratives that resonate with a contemporary audience, thereby enhancing the show’s relatability.
The series has culminated after more than three years of development, emerging from Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney, which oversees Hulu, 20th Television, and Onyx. Although Coogler signed an overall deal with Netflix in June, he remains deeply involved with “The X-Files,” underscoring his commitment to the project.
Carter initially revealed plans for the reboot during a 2023 podcast discussion, emphasizing the need for a diverse cast. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism for the show’s future. In a joint statement, Coogler, Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler shared their enthusiasm about working alongside showrunner Yale and the entire cast to bring this new chapter to fruition. Notably, they also welcomed Ludwig Göransson, a co-founder of Proximity Media, who will contribute the score for the pilot.
The original “X-Files” series debuted on Fox in 1993, spanning nine seasons and generating substantial cultural impact, including two feature films and a revival in 2016. As this new iteration prepares to launch, it aims to capture the spirit of the original series while inviting a modern audience to engage with its compelling narratives.
