Endeavor and Rush University health systems in Chicago plan to merge

In a notable development within the health sector, Rush University and Endeavor Health, two prominent Chicago-area health systems, have announced their plans to merge, a move that stands to significantly reshape the medical landscape in Illinois. This merger will encompass a network of 12 hospitals, employ approximately 46,000 workers, and include around 400 clinics, resulting in the creation of one of the most substantial health systems in the state.

The announcement, which was made through a collaborative press release, highlighted the vision both organizations share in establishing a comprehensive academic health system aimed at better serving the community. According to information from a media source, Endeavor’s President and CEO, Gerald “JP” Gallagher, expressed that the merger is expected to enhance patient access to care, advance research initiatives, and maintain high standards in quality healthcare services available locally.

The newly formed health system will operate under the Rush brand, facilitating a broader reach into both the Chicago metropolitan area and its surrounding suburbs. This strategic consolidation is tailored to bolster healthcare accessibility across a wide geographic expanse. Dr. Omar Lateef, President and CEO of Rush University System for Health and Rush University Medical Center, emphasized that the merger is designed to uphold and extend the principles of excellence and health equity that both institutions have long championed. He pointed out the system’s commitment to enriching community partnerships and addressing health disparities through innovative care and research-driven initiatives.

Central to this merger is an investment of billion from Endeavor aimed at supporting these community partnerships and augmenting academic and research efforts. The merger is anticipated to conclude by early 2027, contingent upon a thorough regulatory review. Following the merger, Gallagher will assume the role of President and CEO of the newly merged entity, which will be governed by a 20-member board composed equally from both organizations.

Rush University, recognized as an academic and nonprofit health system, operates three hospitals—Rush University Medical Center, Rush Oak Park Hospital, and Rush Copley Medical Center—while Endeavor Health, the third-largest health system in Illinois, currently manages nine hospitals, many of which have received distinction for excellence in care.

While the specific implications of the merger for patients remain uncertain, hospital representatives have reassured that there will be no closures as a result of this strategic alignment. As the merger moves forward, it is poised to significantly alter the dynamics of healthcare delivery in the region, positioning Rush- Endavor as a formidable entity within the Illinois health market.
