Apple and Schneider launch smart thermostat aimed at reducing electric bills

Apple, in collaboration with Schneider Electric, is set to release a revolutionary smart thermostat designed to optimize home heating and cooling by leveraging cutting-edge technology. Scheduled to debut in early 2027 in the United States and Canada, the thermostat will be part of the new Apple Home Collection. Schneider Electric has provided suggested retail prices of 9.99 for the thermostat and .99 for optional room sensors, with Apple’s announcement reflecting marginally lower pricing.

This innovative thermostat integrates seamlessly with the Apple Home app, eliminating the need for a separate application or additional account setup. Users can control the temperature via voice commands through Siri, but perhaps its most compelling feature is the Adaptive Temperature technology. This feature utilizes the power of an iPhone to assess the homeowner’s presence, automatically adjusting heating and cooling settings based on occupancy patterns, thus removing the need for manual scheduling.

In addition to enhancing comfort, this device makes significant strides toward energy efficiency. Apple touts its Clean Energy Guidance feature, which enables users to shift their heating and cooling schedules to coincide with periods when electricity is both cleaner and more affordable. For homeowners with compatible utility plans across the contiguous United States, the Home app provides insights into energy consumption alongside peak and off-peak pricing information.

The thermostat’s functionality extends beyond temperature regulation. Optional sensors can monitor temperature and humidity levels in individual rooms, maximizing the comfort of each space. Moreover, existing sensors integrated into Apple products like HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini can also enhance the thermostat’s capabilities.

For network reliability, the device supports Matter, a unified connectivity protocol, and Thread, which maintains connectivity even during internet outages. Setup is further simplified through NFC pairing, allowing initial configuration by merely bringing an iPhone near the device, even prior to powering it on. Importantly, user data stored within the Home app is protected with end-to-end encryption, prioritizing privacy and security.

Schneider Electric also unveiled a series of magnetic power mounts for its new wall-mounted HomeView devices, ranging from USB-C to Ethernet options, with availability set for late 2026 into 2027.

As these advancements unfold, more details are anticipated during the upcoming CES 2027 in Las Vegas, hinting at a future where smart home technology maximizes not only comfort but also energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
