Zendaya cast in Alex Garland’s new sci-fi film for A24

Zendaya is poised to return to the realm of science fiction with a new untitled project written and directed by Alex Garland, known for his acclaimed works in the genre. This film is set to be produced by A24, a studio recognized for its innovative approach to filmmaking. Although specific plot details are being kept confidential, production is scheduled to begin in 2027, signaling another significant collaboration for Zendaya and the production company.

This venture comes on the heels of Zendaya’s notable partnership with A24, which includes the critically acclaimed series “Euphoria” that aired for three seasons, concluding earlier this year. Moreover, Zendaya and A24 teamed up for “The Drama,” a darkly comedic drama featuring Robert Pattinson that achieved remarkable box office success, grossing nearly 5 million worldwide.

For Alex Garland, this project signifies a continuation of his long-standing relationship with A24. The studio has also produced several of his successful films, including “Ex Machina,” “Civil War,” “Men,” and “Warfare.” Furthermore, A24 is currently in the process of developing Garland’s big-budget adaptation of the popular video game “Elden Ring,” which boasts an impressive cast including Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, and Tom Burke. Filming for “The Elden Ring” wrapped on July 30, with a planned release date in March 2028.

Zendaya remains a dominant presence in the film industry, recently starring in two of the highest-grossing films of 2026, “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” both of which shattered box office records. Anticipation is also building for Denis Villeneuve’s latest installment of the “Dune” saga, “Dune: Part Three,” scheduled for release on December 16.

While Garland’s return to science fiction may excite fans, it also raises questions regarding the potential delay of a much-anticipated third installment in the “28 Days Later” franchise. Garland, who was integral to the original film’s success, has crafted a “fantastic script” for this sequel; however, it currently appears to be on hold as he focuses on the “Elden Ring” adaptation, which could further delay the continuation of this iconic story.
