Mitsubishi Power to invest 0 million in Chatham County expansion, generating 220 new jobs

Mitsubishi Power Americas has announced a substantial investment of 0 million to expand its manufacturing operations in Chatham County, Georgia, an initiative set to create over 220 new jobs and nearly double the current footprint of the facility. This was confirmed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in a recent statement.

The expansion will involve the addition of 450,000 square feet to the Savannah Machinery Works located at 1000 Pine Meadow Drive, near Pooler. This facility, positioned prominently along Interstate 16, produces and assembles gas turbines essential for generating electricity for both residential and commercial use. Upon completion, the expanded facility is anticipated to commence operations in early 2029.

Mitsubishi Power emphasizes that the expansion will incorporate advancements in manufacturing technology and overall capacity, significantly enhancing its operational capabilities. Brandon Bodie, vice president of Savannah Machinery Works, expressed optimism about the growth potential the expansion brings to the region.

The newly created jobs will span a variety of positions, including manufacturing, engineering, quality control, maintenance, logistics, operations, and heavy machinery. Local officials have indicated a strong preference for employing residents from the surrounding area for both temporary construction roles and permanent job opportunities.

Hugh “Trip” Tollison, president and CEO of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, noted that the economic impact of such a significant investment would be felt long before the facility officially opens, particularly through workforce needs related to construction activities. He heralded this expansion as a major success for Chatham County, highlighting its competitive nature in securing the project.

Mitsubishi Power’s decision to expand reflects a strategic response to the growing demand for electricity and related power-generation equipment. The company is recognized not only for its manufacturing capabilities in gas, steam, and aero-derivative turbines but also for its innovative work in artificial intelligence technologies aimed at optimizing autonomous power plant operations.

Bill Newsom, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, reiterated that the expansion will bolster domestic manufacturing while equipping employees with advanced technological tools. The company has been rooted in Chatham County since 2009 when it launched the Savannah Machinery Works operation amid the financial downturn.

This expansion follows strategic discussions with state officials in Japan, symbolizing Georgia’s strong commitment to fostering long-term partnerships with established corporations like Mitsubishi Power. Georgia’s transportation infrastructure—comprising its ports, railroads, highways, and airports—was cited as a key factor in making the region appealing for such investment. The Georgia Department of Economic Development played a pivotal role in facilitating this project alongside local economic development authorities and utility partners.

While specific timelines for construction and hiring processes are yet to be disclosed, the comprehensive approach demonstrated in this investment marks a significant step forward in meeting rising energy demands while contributing positively to the local economy.
