Donald Glover to Star in Live-Action Adaptation of PUBG Series at Netflix
Netflix is set to venture into the world of video game adaptations with the development of a live-action series based on PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), one of the most popular battle royale games by Krafton. The streaming giant has tapped Emmy-winning creator Donald Glover to direct, write, and star in the series. Glover will collaborate with his brother, Stephen Glover, in executive producing the project, ensuring a personal touch from the duo known for their previous work on acclaimed series such as Atlanta.
This ambitious adaptation comes following extensive negotiations driven by Netflix’s desire to bring Glover, a prominent figure in contemporary television, on board. Glover left his long-standing relationship with FX in 2021 to enter a lucrative overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. However, the renewed first-look arrangement with Amazon offers him the flexibility to work on projects across different platforms, including this promising Netflix adaptation.
The arrival of PUBG on streaming platforms aligns with ongoing trends in content creation, where gaming franchises are being repurposed for television due to their vast, built-in audiences. Since its debut in 2017, PUBG has not only attracted millions of gamers worldwide but has also secured seven Guinness World Records, establishing itself as a cultural phenomenon. Krafton has been looking to expand the PUBG brand through various entertainment formats, having announced plans for both a film and television series back in 2020. For this adaptation, Krafton’s entertainment division, LV3H, will play a pivotal role in development and production.
PUBG is not the only gaming adaptation in Netflix’s pipeline; the platform is also actively working on a range of projects inspired by popular games. This includes a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, a Gears of War film, and animated adaptations of Minecraft and Magic: The Gathering, among others.
In addition to his work on PUBG, Glover has remained influential in the industry, serving as an executive producer for Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with speculation surrounding his return to the titular role in the series’ second season. The collaborative efforts with Stephen Glover on Atlanta have previously garnered high praise, indicating a strong potential for success in this new endeavor.
With the interest in video game adaptations at an all-time high, PUBG may well contribute to redefining how interactive entertainment is showcased within mainstream media, confirming Netflix’s commitment to diversifying its content slate.
