Choi Woo-je fails to finalize contract renewal with Hanwha Life ahead of Worlds

In a noteworthy development in the esports industry, Choi Woo-je, known by his in-game name ‘Zeus’ and a prominent member of Hanwha Life Esports, has reportedly declined a contract renewal proposal from the organization prior to the commencement of the 2026 League of Legends World Championship. Despite his recent rejection, it is important to note that Choi’s current contract remains in effect until mid-November, allowing potential room for negotiations ahead of the upcoming free agency market.

A media source recently detailed that Choi Woo-je’s decision to reject the renewal offer comes after a change in his representation. As he embarks on this new chapter, Choi is poised to test his value on the free agency market, indicating a strategic move that could position him at the forefront of offseason player acquisitions.

This decision is not isolated to Hanwha Life Esports; it reflects a broader pattern within the competitive gaming landscape. Many teams engage in contract renewal discussions with their players as the Worlds approach, aiming to finalize their rosters for the next season. Hanwha Life Esports, which faced early elimination in the Worlds Swiss Stage, falling 0-2 against the LPL’s BLG, now finds itself in a situation where securing Choi’s future is imperative for strategic planning.

Industry analysts speculate that Choi Woo-je could emerge as a highly sought-after player if he enters the free agency market. His impressive performance history, including a significant triumph at the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), underscores his value as a competitor. The club’s recent earlier-than-expected exit from the Worlds underscores the urgency with which Hanwha Life must address Choi’s future.

A representative from Hanwha Life Esports conveyed that discussions with Choi remain ongoing, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to keeping lines of communication open during this pivotal time for both the player and the team. As the esports sector evolves and player contracts come under scrutiny, developments like these will be critical to watch in the coming weeks.
