FBI Connects North Korea’s TraderTraitor to Historic .43 Billion Binance Crypto Heist
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formally linked the theft of over billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, one of the largest digital asset exchanges globally, to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor. This group has been identified by various aliases, including Jade Sleet and Pressure Chollima, and operates under the purview of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
According to information released by the FBI, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the criminal organization is believed to have primarily converted the stolen assets into Ethereum (ETH). The FBI has indicated that the assets will likely be further laundered through decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and instant swap services, a process that is increasingly common in the world of digital currency. The agency has also released a list of wallet addresses associated with the group’s laundering activities.
In light of the incident, Binance announced the resumption of phase one of its withdrawal services, which had been temporarily paused. The platform has stated that it is taking precautionary measures to enhance security and has conducted necessary assessments to safeguard its services. Binance emphasized its ongoing commitment to restoring functionality while ensuring the protection of its users.
This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing issue of cryptocurrency theft, outpacing the previous record theft of .46 billion from Bybit in February 2025. The current breach involved a complex operation that spanned 11 blockchain networks, with a staggering 82% of the stolen funds residing on Ethereum and Bitcoin. Recent analyses have revealed that TraderTraitor has been involved in cryptocurrency thefts amounting to more than .5 billion over recent years.
The techniques employed by TraderTraitor have evolved over time, including craftily designed social engineering tactics that lure victims into downloading malicious software. Recent reports suggest that the group has been leveraging trojanized software delivery methods, specifically targeting professionals in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and blockchain industries. These operations illustrate a sophisticated understanding of their victims, utilizing AI-generated scenarios to present themselves as legitimate recruiters, further complicating detection efforts.
As the incident unfolds, Binance continues to process withdrawals and remains vigilant about enhancing its security framework to mitigate future risks. The events surrounding the Binance hack highlight the growing challenges associated with crypto-cybersecurity and the escalating threat posed by state-sponsored hacking entities.
