Ex-President Bolsonaro of Brazil has successfully undergone surgery while serving his sentence in prison.

As Brazil navigates its complex political landscape, former President Jair Bolsonaro’s recent surgery symbolizes both a moment of personal vulnerability and political intrigue. While he faces significant legal challenges, his operation for a double hernia highlights the convergence of personal health and public life, revealing a leader grappling with his legacy amidst ongoing political upheaval.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has undergone a successful surgery for an inguinal hernia, according to his wife, Michelle, amidst his ongoing prison sentence for leading an attempted coup. The 70-year-old former leader was permitted to leave prison on Wednesday for the first time since late November to receive treatment at DF Star Hospital in Brasília. His surgery was reported to have gone smoothly, with no complications noted.
In an Instagram post, Michelle Bolsonaro confirmed, “Successful surgery completed, without complications. Now we wait for him to wake up from anesthesia.” Bolsonaro has been serving a 27-year prison term since November after being convicted for attempting to prevent current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office. Following his surgery, doctors estimated that his hospital stay would last between five to seven days.
The surgical procedure was deemed necessary to alleviate pain caused by Bolsonaro’s double hernia, a condition he has been dealing with for some time. Having faced several health issues since being stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign rally in 2018, Bolsonaro has also recently been diagnosed with skin cancer. Dr. Claudio Birolini shared insights about the complexity of the surgery, stating, “It is a complex surgery, but it is standardized and scheduled, so we expect the procedure to be carried out without major complications.”
The surgery not only addressed the hernia but also opened the possibility for an additional procedure. Doctors will assess the need for a phrenic nerve blockage to help manage Bolsonaro’s recurrent hiccups.
Meanwhile, Bolsonaro remains confined to a small room at the federal police headquarters, equipped with amenities such as a minibar, air conditioning, and television. Despite his circumstances, he continues to focus on his political legacy. In a letter written to supporters prior to his surgery, he confirmed his endorsement of his eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, as the Liberal Party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election. Flavio is set to challenge President Lula, who is seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term.
In this letter, which he publicly shared through his son, Bolsonaro noted his desire for continuity in his political vision, asserting that Flavio represents the path of progress and responsibility he began before his presidency. The conjectures surrounding his health and the political landscape reveal a complex interplay of personal and public responsibility as Brazil moves forward.
As Bolsonaro’s situation unfolds, many are observing how his health and legal battles influence his son’s political aspirations and the broader Brazilian political scene.
