SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Workers at multiple Bay Area Peet’s Coffee shops are still processing the news that their stores will be closing.

This is happening as the Berkeley-based coffee chain is being taken over by Keurig Dr Pepper.

“It’s been a really emotional time period,” said Dino Solis, who works at the location on Telegraph and Dwight Street in Berkeley.

They said they were told about the closure last Monday.

“For the first couple of days, some of us were either crying during the notification, some of us are trying to figure out what our next moves are, are we trying to apply to new jobs. What are our options?” Solis said. “When we were asking about transfers, it seemed that there was a lot of conversations around multiple stores being closed, and therefore, it wouldn’t be an equitable practice to transfer so many workers across different shops. So, we were not given that option at all.”

Solis, who is also a union representative of Peet’s Labor Union Industrial Workers of the World said their shop is the only one of the Bay Area’s four unionized shops to close but knows there are other non-union shops closing.

Our media partner, the San Francisco Standard, reported that locations at the Castro and on Polk Street will close in less than two weeks.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the location on the 900 block of Cole Street will also be closing.

ABC7 News asked Peet’s Coffee how many total locations were closing locally and which ones. A spokesperson only gave us this statement:

“Peet’s has made the difficult decision to close a number of Peet’s Coffee locations by the end of January 2026. These closures reflect a broader effort to align our business with long-term growth priorities and current market conditions. We are deeply grateful to our incredible employees and loyal customers for their continued commitment to the brand. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to the quality, craftsmanship, and heritage that have defined Peet’s for the past 60 years, while embracing new opportunities to innovate and grow.”

Customers we spoke with were disappointed by the news.

“It seems like a shame to me. People love to gather here,” said Howard Edelstein.

“It’s sad. It’s very, very sad,” said Juan Davila, who told us he’s been a longtime customer.

Solis said the union is working to meet with the employer to see how employees can be better supported. The union is also working to contact employees impacted at the non-unionized stores and encourages them to reach out.
