Everything you need to survive this weekend’s massive winter storm – Yahoo

This weekend will mark what might be the biggest winter storm of the season. Meteorologists have been using terms like “catastrophic” and “monster” to describe it, and it’s set to bury most of the country in snow and ice, including many areas that rarely see this kind of weather. If you’re feeling ill-prepared for what may come — power outages, being stranded at home or in your car, frozen pipes, etc. — take a deep breath. I’ve got you.

As a longtime Colorado resident, I’ve survived more than my fair share of snowmageddons and polar vortexes, including a 1997 blizzard that dumped 3 feet of the white stuff and left residents — myself included — trapped in their homes for days. Don’t let that happen to you — and if it’s inevitable, make sure you’re prepared. From your house to your car to your body, here are some items that could make the difference between cozy and calamitous this weekend.

Quick Overview

Prep the house

It’s gonna get cold. Like, really cold. Get proactive by sealing drafts, protecting outdoor spigots, having extra heating sources and more.

Frozen pipes create a flooding disaster, and with storms like these, you might not be able to call in expert reinforcements right away. Be proactive with faucet covers. More than 8,800 Amazon customers swear by these for protecting their pipes during the winter. Made of insulated, waterproof fabric, they keep excess moisture away from your spigots.

To install them, you just slip the opening over your faucet, twist the drawstring around the cover a few times and pull to tighten.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning risk significantly increases during winter storms with increased use of generators and the potential for snow to block vents.

This plug-in option should work for just about any home, and we named it one of the best in our list of best CO detectors. It’s one of the few plug-ins that made it into the top of Consumer Reports rankings for its ability to detect and accurately display CO levels. It has a battery backup and a memory feature that records the highest levels of CO that have been detected. It also has a long cord that enables you to attach it to the wall higher up than the socket it is plugged into.

Want to keep your fridge and other big-ticket appliances running? (Answer: Yes!) Time to invest in a more powerful backup, and none impressed Broida like the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus, which he crowned one of the best portable power stations for 2025.

It’s a convenient alternative to a generator and, though pricey, it’s worth the money, he says. I cannot agree more because — I kid you not — as I was writing this, the power went out at my house, and my husband got our internet up and running again with our own Jackery. Can’t make this stuff up, folks…

If the power goes kaput, you’ll need a quick solution to provide some light so you can spring into action. These tiny torches pack mega-wattage, plus they’re super durable, made from water-resistant, military-grade aluminum that the brand claims can withstand a 10-foot drop.

You’ll need three AAA batteries (or one 3.7 V rechargeable lithium battery) for each flashlight, which are not included. You’ll want to have spare batteries on hand anyway, so consider adding extras to your emergency kit while you’re at it.

Our tech editor, Rick Broida, named this little guy the best overall power station under $250, praising it for its capacity (288Wh) and numerous outputs, including four USB ports and three AC outlets. At 9.1 pounds, this was the heaviest battery he tested in this price range, but that shouldn’t matter if you’re just using it around the house.

More than 5,700 shoppers gave this AM/FM gadget a five-star rating thanks to its bevy of features, including an SOS flashlight, an ultrasonic dog whistle and a weather radio that automatically scans for the strongest signal to help you stay informed. Just looking for something to keep your devices charged so you can keep in touch with the outside world? Our colleagues over at Engadget named this device one of the best power banks and portable chargers, and at less than $45, it’s also one of the most affordable on their list. Just make sure it’s fully charged before the first flake hits.

In testing, the 30 watts of power took a Galaxy S23 phone from 5% to full battery in just over an hour. In 20 minutes, it bumped a near-dead iPhone 15 to 45%.

When my sister was a baby and the power went out in the dead of a North Dakota winter, piling every blanket in the house on the bed and climbing in was the way my parents kept everyone safe.

These days, it’s a bit easier — if you lose electricity and the house gets suuuuper chilly, plug this baby into a power bank, get under the covers and wait out the storm. And might we recommend you also stock up on a few good books to keep you entertained?

Clear a path

Eventually, you’re going to have to go outside and address all that white stuff. Clear the walks, sweep off the car, etc. Help keep it easy and safe with some tools meant to make quick work of those arduous tasks.

This sunny scooper — the best overall in our testing — was recommended to Yahoo by several experts, thanks to its curved handle, lightweight materials and ergonomic D-grip handle. According to the brand, the blade shape is designed for both shoveling and pushing, and it features a nylon wear strip that’s gentle on wooden decks and other more delicate surfaces.

“The curved, ergonomic shaft helps reduce bending and lower-back strain,” explains Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo, a board-certified orthopedic and spinal surgeon based in New York City. “It’s relatively lightweight and designed to encourage lifting with the legs instead of the back.”
