Alibaba shares drop following .2 billion share placement for AI investment

Shares of Alibaba Group Holding Limited experienced a significant decline on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, dropping as much as 10% on Monday following the announcement of an 80 billion Hong Kong dollar (.20 billion) placement of newly issued shares aimed at non-U.S. investors. The company reported plans to allocate the entire net proceeds to bolster its full-stack artificial intelligence capabilities, focusing particularly on enhancing its AI infrastructure.

In this share issuance, Alibaba intends to release 710 million new shares at a price of HK2.70 each. This price is notably lower than the stock’s closing price of HK3 on the previous Friday, with shares trading as low as HK2.70 at one point on Monday, concluding the day at 8.4% lower than the previous close.

This latest move by Alibaba comes in the wake of its recent earnings report, which revealed a staggering 75% drop in profit for the June quarter. The decline has been attributed to the company’s substantial investments in AI, which increased capital expenditure by 75% to 67.7 billion yuan. The impact of these expenses was felt across other markets, as Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares also saw a decrease, falling by 3.4% in premarket trading.

Industry analysts, however, have expressed optimism regarding Alibaba’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence. Vey-Sern Ling, a senior equity advisor at UBP, noted that Alibaba remains well-positioned to capitalize on AI growth, citing its strong cloud computing infrastructure and advanced AI models. Ling also pointed out that while profits may face short-term pressure as investments in capital expenditure rise, the long-term outlook appears promising.

Alibaba is not alone in ramping up its AI investments; other Chinese technology giants are making similar commitments. Tencent, another major player in the sector, has reported a 65% increase in capital expenditure to 52.8 billion yuan in the same quarter, as it continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure.

As the competition in the AI sector intensifies, Alibaba aims to solidify its position as a leader in this pivotal field, recognizing the technology’s potential as a significant driver of future growth.
